How to Backtest a Strategy with Bar Replay

Bar replay hides every candle after a moment you choose and plays the chart forward one candle at a time. It is the closest thing to trading the past without knowing what comes next.

Why replay instead of scrolling back

When you scroll back on a chart, your eye sees the future: the big move after a setup is right there, and it is very hard not to be influenced by it. Replay removes that. Indicators are recalculated only on the candles that are visible, so they look exactly as they did at the time.

Step 1 — write the rules first

Before you start, write down your entry, stop, target and filters in one or two sentences each. For example: "Long when price is above the 200 EMA and the MACD line crosses up below zero; stop below the last swing low; target twice the risk." If you cannot write it down, you cannot test it.

Step 2 — pick the start

In the OrderView Android app, tap Replay under the chart, then either tap the candle where the replay should start or choose a date. Pick a period you do not remember well, and try several different market conditions: trending up, trending down and sideways.

Step 3 — play and trade

Use play, pause and single-step controls, at a speed that lets you think. When your rules trigger, press Buy or Sell, set the stop and target — the app suggests distances based on recent volatility and shows the reward-to-risk ratio — and continue. Trades close automatically when a candle touches the stop or the target. If one candle touches both, it counts as a loss, which keeps the results honest.

Step 4 — collect enough trades

Ten trades tell you almost nothing. Aim for at least 50 to 100 across different periods before drawing conclusions. Change one rule at a time between test sessions.

Step 5 — read the statistics

StatisticWhy it matters
Win rateMeaningless on its own: a 35% win rate can be profitable with large winners.
Average win / average lossTogether with win rate, decides whether the strategy makes money.
Average result in RProfit per trade measured in units of risk — comparable across coins.
Profit factorTotal gains divided by total losses; above 1 means net profit in the sample.
Largest drawdownThe deepest fall from a peak — can you live through it?

OrderView's results screen shows all of these at the end of a replay.

The limits of any backtest
